Our Mission

General Practice Cairns assists the people of Cairns to live healthy lives by supporting health care in our community that exceeds expectations and contributes to liveability of our city.

Our Vision

To achieve a cohesive, effective and sustainable primary health care system for the Cairns community.

What is General Practice Cairns?

General Practice Cairns (GPC) is one of 119 Divisions of General Practice in Australia, which were first established in 1992, through what is now known as the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing, to provide support to General Practice at the local level.

GPC services the area from Palm Cove to Babinda, including Yarrabah, approximately the area of the Cairns City Council. (General Practices in the rest of Far North Queensland are supported by the Far North Queensland Rural Division of General Practice.)

Our primary role is to support GPs in providing quality primary health care to the community. GPC acts a point of liaison between GPs, government, other health care providers, the media and the general community.

GPs serve as advisers and spokespersons for GPC as we develop and coordinate initiatives to address community needs and improve the effectiveness of general practice, for example in the areas of health promotion, immunisation and the management of chronic diseases such as diabetes, mental health and asthma.

GPC also provides Continuing Professional Development opportunities to help Cairns GPs and general practice staff keep up to date with the latest developments and information relating to General Practice.
